Good respiratory health is highly important to ensure your calves reach their full potential
A calf’s respiratory system is very vulnerable. The airways are relatively narrow and the lungs only become mature when the animal is 2 years old. As a result they have very little reserve capacity.
4 ways to help your calves
A calf’s respiratory tract is vulnerable from four weeks onwards. Changing weather, high humidity, large differences between daytime and night-time temperatures and poor housing conditions can all have a negative effect on a calf’s airways. Inadequate ventilation, crowded housing, mixing calves from different sources and transportation should be avoided where possible.
That is why it is important to manage environmental conditions, boost your calves immunity and maximise their respiratory health.
1. Colostrum management
Ensure calves get sufficient amounts of colostrum. This improves their immunity during the first months of life.
2. Climate and housing
Avoid over-crowding and variations in temperature and humidity as much as possible, and ensure sufficient ventilation. If you expect large differences between daytime and night-time temperatures, shave the calves properly. This reduces sweating and prevents the calves being wet the moment the temperature starts to drop.
Consult your vet to ensure calves are properly vaccinated against the most important respiratory pathogens.
4. Avoid stressful situations
Stress usually results in lower immunity, so avoid stressful situations whenever possible. Consider a stepwise weaning programme and do not make sudden changes in the rations. Ensure each animal has sufficient space at the feeding fence. Avoid performing stressful procedures simultaneously. For example, do not dehorn calves at the same time they are being weaned.

When to use Farm-O-San Pulmosure
On some farms it is possible to identify periods of high risk, e.g. when calves are moved from pasture and housed in the autumn. Use Farm-O-San Pulmosure for a period of 10-21 days. Keep in mind that if the situation gets out of control, you should seek the advice of a veterinarian.
